Drew Daniel

Johns Hopkins University

Drew Daniel is an English Professor at the Johns Hopkins University. His research interests include “Early Modern Literature,” “Critical Theory” and “Aesthetics.”

On November 6, 2023, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) published an announcement welcoming a letter signed by 24 Johns Hopkins faculty members, including Daniel.

The open letter—drafted two weeks after the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack against Israel—starts by acknowledging the loss of life on both sides of the conflict. However, the statement of solidarity with Gaza goes on to say:

“…Palestinians in Gaza are being subjected to a draconian collective punishment. We condemn the horrific ongoing violence inflicted on the Palestinian people, and we urgently call for an end to the Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip. The risk of genocide is real.”

The full letter can be viewed here and below.

CAIR Maryland Director Zainab Chaudry said, “We applaud the faculty members at Johns Hopkins who took a stand against the Israeli government’s openly genocidal campaign against the people of Gaza…” CAIR also “encouraged faculty members at other institutions of higher education nationwide to follow suit and call for an immediate ceasefire.”
