Gabrielle Gambrell
New York University
Gabrilelle Gambrell is “an Adjunct Instructor in Marketing and Public Relations at New York University (NYU). According to her university profile, she “teaches graduate-level courses in integrated marketing, digital and social media, media relations, corporate communications and more.”
In a program for the Dr. Phil Show, Gambrell was consulted for her opinions on censorship and the effect of “offensive” tweets on a person’s job.
Responding to Dr. Phil’s question about the censorship of “hate speech,” Gambrell stated:
“I am extremely in favor of the First Amendment…but we have seen things that happen when social media is not censored…where there’s negativity there should be censorship.” She cited what she deemed were instances of racist, homophobic, and other types of “nasty” behavior recorded on social media posts, but gave no examples.
Gambrell believes that, “In certain instances where [a social media post is] harmful, in certain instances where it can hurt people, where there’s negative intent, there should be censorship.”
The NYU professor — who formerly held jobs in U.S. media — went on to say she feels satisfaction when users of hate speech lose their jobs because of what they posted on social media:
“In some instances where I see viral videos where someone is clearly racist or homophobic or anything nasty and then the video goes viral, they lose their job, I’m like ‘score’ because that person does not deserve to have this title which can impact certain communities, they need to work on themselves.”
Gambrell’s website states that she is “a champion for diversity, equity and inclusion,” which are also problems she seeks to solve through “executive, corporate and brand consulting services.”
